Thanks for a great blog that delves so deeply into what so many of us felt/feel as we are still trying to say goodby to a piece of UVA basketball history that we may never see again. Yes, the Terry Holland says we’re special but most of it rotated around Ralph and a couple of years afterward. This has been a sustained and high achieving run over an extended period. I’ll really miss CTB but will sure continue to follow the Cavs in the future but it won’t be the same without Tony around guiding them.
Moment of reflection. My favorite picture of all these 15 years is at the conclusion of the National Championship game. As the staff, players and fans exploded around him in jubilation (rightfully so) Tony sat on the bench/chair with head bowed in thankfulness to God for the moment and the achievement.
Enjoy your musings and look forward to more down the road.
    Go Hoos!

Thanks for this genuine and eloquent piece. I too have chosen gratitude rather than lamenting our loss because Tony was being true to himself. He will cast a long shadow over UVA and its athletic programs. Current and future leaders will measure themselves against his example.

Thank you for putting this into words. As someone a generation behind you in fandom, Tony’s era meant all of this and even more. My childhood of UVA fandom has no memory of Jeff jones, let alone Holland, and consisted of early heartbreak (getting upset by Gonzaga in 2001, missing the tournament in, 2002, and generally being bad and unmemorable outside of the 1 great year with Sean and JR).

Tony took over the year before I enrolled, and my 1st year on grounds was the 2010-11 season. I went to the open practice before the season that year, and could watch from the front row so few students were there, and tony made it a point to stay and talk to us after. It was incredibly exciting to be at the games and know that even though our record was mediocre, something was shifting. Even after we lost Mike Scott, we were playing the big boys in the conference competitively, and you could sense that with some seasoning and luck, this team could be legitimately good. My fourth year was 13-14, the year we finally had health and put it all together, and I got to watch the team finally just be awesome. Many of my memories from my 20s are mixed in with UVA basketball; including them beating UNC in the ACC tournament the day of my wedding, only to lose to umbc on my honeymoon the next week. When I started coaching high school jv basketball myself, I used Tony’s pillars to teach character (which we need when we win all of 2 games my first year). All of which made the title the following year even sweeter.

I’m glad Tony had the courage to step away – even selfishly if as a fan I wished he would have found a way to make it work (as I still maintain he could have). But I also hope that just like we all underestimated him at the outset of his time, that an assistant who learned at his side for years will be the perfect person to continue his legacy and values while adapting to the new reality on the ground

Thank you for sharing. It’s interesting that just 8 years made our childhood and college fandom experiences so different!

These things are fleeting and we were fortunate to catch lightning in a bottle when we did!

Now we get to be hopeful that it’s easier to do so moving forward.

Wonderful writing, as always. You put into words what made Bennett great and what we are all feeling. I’m so sad but am thankful to have had such a great run from 2014 to 2019, even if we never achieve it again. Most college hoops fans don’t ever experience their team winning it all. No one will ever be able to take that away from me. I really hope we don’t slide back to the days where we missed the tourney more often than not. I appreciate all the time you put into writing these pieces. I don’t know how you have the time

I could nit agree more,,this is a beautifully written Tribute to CTB abd the accuracy is spit on. We’re going ti miss the fear CTB being at the helm, but we wil always cherish his legacy which will live on forever. We will never forget the disappointments for our team but always remember this is part of the sport. I think about what we all learn through setbacks makes us appreciate the greatness of magnificant victories. All along the way, the 5 Pillars and what UVA stands for…

I know Ron Sanchez will be looking to you, Tony, for support and guidance. We can count on you being not far away and we can’t wait to see what your next role to help UVA!

God bless you, your family, Tony. Next year, I will be celebrating my 45th yr as a Hoo Alum. I’ve followed UVA basketball since I was 12 years old. Each year, I always counted the days from when the Tourney was over til when the new season began. These past 15 years, I most especially could scarcely wait to see what our great CTB would teach us next and not only about basketball but character.

We love you, Tony. We thank you and we look forward to seeing you continue teach us all by your example.

Tony demonstrated countless times the measure of a true gentleman. He modeled character and integrity for all to see! I am 72 years old, have watched the hoos since the early 70’s. We have been so fortunate that we have had the likes of tony, terry holland, and barry parkhill in and around this great program. We all need role models watching these folks on the court and living their lives has been food for all of our soles. I hope we chose wisely as we look for tonys replacement.
